Who We Are
We are a group of people that meet weekly for community and meditation. Our aim is to provide a place for us to meet with a foundation of non-harming to support each other in creating a more peaceful world. Beginners are always welcome. Each meeting will include meditation instructions, wisdom teachings from the Buddha and group discussion. Meditation will be done in chairs. The Insight Richmond meditation group welcomes all cultures and identities, and will offer meditation instruction and support for both beginners and experienced practitioners.
History of Insight Richmond
Back in late 2015, when our founding teacher Ashley Sharp first moved to Richmond, she realized that there were no Insight Meditation sitting groups nearby so she wanted to start one. She asked her Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leader colleagues, Mary Davis and Thomas Davis to join as co-teachers. On March 23, 2016, Insight Richmond held its first sitting in the Children's Art Room at the Richmond Art Center. It was a charming, though slightly chaotic, space, but it held a wonderful creative energy befitting our new group.
In November of 2016, we moved to our current home at the Open Door United Methodist Church. Befitting their name, the church has been a welcoming gracious host for our group. The space is comfortable, clean, and with great sunsets viewable through the many windows.
Thomas Davis left the teaching team in June of 2018 to pursue a teaching and leadership opportunities at InsightLA. Our loss was LA's gain. And that November Ashley Sharp stepped down to pursue her next moves in her dharma path. Into this void, Mary invited many diverse teachers to take the seat. In March of 2019, Kevin Martin, who was present at our first Insight Richmond sitting, joined Mary as a co-leader of the group.
The community at Insight Richmond is warm, welcoming and sincere. You are welcome to join us anytime!
